Camberwell Velvet
c.1894. Attributed to Charles Voysey, a leading figure of the Arts and Crafts and Art Nouveau movements, this design has been drawn from a fragment found in an elegant town house in Camberwell, South London. The pattern itself is a fine example of the tulip detail, which was highly popular in the late 19th century. Printed on velvet, sunset petals curl around each other like flames in this luscious fabric.
This is a cut pile velvet with natural linen ground. Due to the weaving process there may be variations in the depth of theĀ pile of the velvet. The linen ground may contain natural slubs and irregularities which are a normal part of theĀ characteristics of the fibre.
