c. 1871 One of four original wallpapers designed by Watts, inspired by the work of the 1874 founder George Gilbert Scott and an enduring Watts favourite. This print is derived from the bird and flower type of eighteenth-century Chinese wallpaper, which was intended for rooms of small proportions. Reflecting the 19th-century fascination with exoticism and the decorative arts, the design is strengthened by a closely observed naturalism, with every petal and feather captured in exquisite minute detail.
